Emily's Spanish Accent Power Point Writing to Learn Project
Diana's Writing to Learn Cesar Chavez Organized Reading notes.
This activity is based on the reading on Cesar Chavez. In this activity I will ask students to get together in pairs and read one paragraph at a time. I will require them to take notes summarizing each paragraph as they complete it. When they are done with the reading they will then have to fill the handout that was provided at the beginning of the lesson. Some questions can be answered directly from the reading, and others will need to be drawn from inferences or prior knowledge. This will allow students to remember the reading, and also help them improve their critical thinking by making them draw connections with what they know, and what they learned from the reading. This activity will also help them with their writing abilities. They will be able to organize their thoughts, and take from the reading the key points. Writing To Learn Fundamentals
Jennifer's German Writing to Learn Graphic Organizer
This is a Graphic Organizer for during reading. This summarizes the main questions, that a student should be asking while reading a passage. This can be done in groups or with a partner and this helps organize the main ideas that are involved in the article.
The reason why we need them to write in the German language classroom, so that they can practice writing German and thinking in German. If this article was written in German, the students would have to spend time to find the information in the article, which might not stand out to them right away. Even though this exercise may seem very elementary, but it is crucial to the understanding of an article. It is amazing to see that the students sometimes are not even able to find the simple questions, so practicing this with every article is crucial. Because this is not their own language, the tasks involved are harder for students. The writing would be done in German, because students need to use German more often, since they are not able to use German outside of the classroom. Writing in English would be good for a homework assignment or an assignment that the students are not able to answer in German yet. Writing and learning a language goes hand in hand and a language classroom cannot exist without writing.
The new idea for me though is student's response to their learning. That can be done in English. This will help the instructor understand what the student did not understand or did understand and how they felt. So keeping a learning journal is very important for student-teacher communication.
After Reading Introduction and Ending
This is an after reading exercise. When the students have read a story, they will write one paragraph that comes immediately before the story begins or they can write a paragraph immediately after the ending of the story. This can be done in groups and the students will present their beginnings and the endings. It is short and it is very entertaining to see the students be very creative and write fun stories. This is done in the target language, which checks for their understanding. If they did not understand what happened in the story, they could not write an introduction or an ending. By having them work in groups, they will teach and remind each other of the important vocabulary that was used in the story. This will also teach them how to continue writing in the tone and style that the author used in the story. This would not be graded, I would only correct out loud 2-3 mistakes for the whole class to learn.
